July 28: Jackie French Comes to the Mountains

More recently we were fortunate to host a dinner with Jackie French for CBCA members at Le Petite Chalet in North Katoomba. Jackie entertained guests before dinner with an insight into her writing and the importance of books for everyone.  The following day, Jackie visited Blackheath Public School where she thrilled students from a number of local schools. Throughout the day, over 500 students sat entranced as Jackie entertained and informed them about her writing and the stories incorporated within her books. While in the mountains, Jackie attended a number of other local events, including an Open Day at Pinerolo with Margaret Hamilton.

Launch 28th May - Little Free Libraries with our reading community-

In 2015 Jenny Gorman with Megalong Books coordinated a successful application for a grant from the James Patterson Foundation to establish a series of Little Free Libraries in the Blue Mountains communities. These are supplementary to the great work done by school and public libraries in the area. We are currently setting up compact collections of good books for members of the community to borrow one and replace one in the following local businesses: Rust & Timber, Lawson; Gingerbread House, Katoomba; Wayzgoose Café & Gifts 'n Things, Leura. We will be launching this venture on 28th May at The Gingerbread House in Katoomba. We truly are creating and growing our part of Australia! Story Country. Click here for more details.

Across all ages

Students from Blackheath PS adapted the picture book, Wilfred Gordon Macdonald Partridge (by Mem Fox and Julie Vivas) to share with the residents of Morven Gardens Aged Care Centre in Leura. The themes of kindness and caring and the importance of memories and friendships are easily identified with regardless of age. This stories-across-generations link will continue with involvement in Grandparents Day, ANZAC ceremony, and other events throughout the year. Click here for more details.
