Kids Anticipate! Appreciate! Applaud! - The Short List for Younger Readers

KIDS’ AAA 2017 DAY - SHARING THE SHORTLIST – Escape to EVERYWHERE

Reading teams from Wallsend and Whalan Public Schools created a unique start to CBCA Book Week 2017 with guest author Belinda Murrell at the CBCA NSW Branch Inc Kids AAA free video conference on August 18. This annual event gives schools throughout the state a chance to connect with authors and each other through DART distance education.

The session finished at 12:00 noon when the winning titles of 2017 CBCA Book of the Year Awards were announced

Belinda shared her author suitcase full of writing treasures based on her books and personal reading favourites. Her enthusiasm for reading and writing energised the day.

Belinda’s own books include: the Sun Sword trilogy; the Lulu Bell series; and the Time Slip series allcreate “believable characters that are as fascinating to talk about as real people“

Dressed as the characters in the shortlisted books for younger readers, our reading teams focused on unique features of each book, characters’ points of view and objects they included in packing their own suitcases of items related to the books.

Some of the highlights included: Belinda’s answers to our questions; suggestions to write to an author; reading the books and listening to others; finding that other people might like the book as much as you; making the book suitcases; seeing the different things people collected for the same book; and talking to everyone through the screens.

This year’s Short List for Younger Readers includes hints of quirky historical links, a special horse, mythical ceremonies, dark magic, horrors of war, and a journey through nature.

While Captain Jimmy Cook Discovers Third Grade was the kids’ choice winner, they all agreed that the award for Rockhopping as the official winner was well deserved.
